Robyn & Elizabeth Clout, a mother/daughter artistic team show their unique traditional and non-traditional style quilts in a textile exhibition during October 2014.
Robyn has always enjoyed sewing from her childhood. She would progress from making dolls clothes, to later sewing her clothes and then her children's clothes. She became interested in traditional quilt making 10 years ago, when she started sewing traditional style quilts using patterns. It wasn't until 2011 that she started thinking about quilts as an art form. He style of quilt making changed after attending a Nancy Crow course, and this opened up a way of expressing how she sees colours, shapes and design in creating her own quilts. Robyn says, "It's the start of my development as an artist, and I am looking forward to the journey I have commenced."
Elizabeth has been working in textiles since 2011 when her mother introduced her to quilting in New Zealand at a Nancy Crow workshop. This led to finding inspiration with the Elements and Principles of Art. Her artistic background is in ceramics and so she has found it interesting to use a different media. Elizabeth says, "My quilting is non-traditional and I do not intend to pick up a pattern (something I have never used). I like the challenge of 'painting with fabric' a technique that I wish to explore more."
